When it Rains, it Pours

“When it rains, it pours.” This is a common phrase we’ve all heard. It’s common because it seems as though that’s just how life works!

Not only does the furnace go out, but the garage door breaks, the hot water heater leaks and the water softener needs to be repaired. (I’m not making this up! This was literally a week from our life. Yup, all in one week.) When it rains, it pours.

Not only is your husband out of town, but the kids get sick and eventually so do you. When it rains, it pours.

Not only are you dealing with the loss of a loved one, but you’re having health issues and your children seem to be acting out. When it rains, it pours.

Mind you, these are all real life situations. They are not concocted for effect. I’m sure you could add to the list. So, why does it pour? Why does God give us more than we can handle on our own? I can’t claim to be an expert on the environment, but something I do know is that sometimes the earth needs more than a sprinkle. At the most divine times, the earth needs a pouring rain. It needs to be saturated. The water needs to sink into the deep layers of the earth to penetrate to the roots. Did you know the early sense of the word saturate means to satisfy? As our troubles build on the surface, we become saturated (or satisfied) with His love in the deep layers of our souls. Trust is there, in the depths. A deep trust in our True Constant. It is there that our perspective changes from external to the eternal. In the pouring rain, we lift our heads and look up to the heavens.

Trust and look up.

Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you.”

When it rains, it pours. Penetrating our souls, developing a trust that looks to the heavens and there we experience a perfect peace.

If it’s raining and pouring, God is not snoring, (hehe.) Trust. Fix your thoughts on His promises. The rain will subside, the sun will shine. Look up! You won’t want to miss it! Slowly you’ll see. Red….orange….yellow….green…..blue….purple promises.
